Evento: Maggie Stiefvater en San Diego [All the Crooked Saints tour]

¡Hola! El domingo 15 de octubre tuve la oportunidad de asistir a la firma de Maggie Stiefvater en San Diego, una parada de su tour All the Crooked Saints. Este fue un evento enumerado y aunque pre ordené el libro con dos semanas de anticipación, me tocó el número 51 en la fila.

agarrar una silla. Cuando llegué afortunadamente la plática aun no iniciaba, así que recogí mi copia de All the Crooked Saints, tome un book plate y esperé a que iniciara el evento.

Maggie platicó un poco sobre la historia detrás de All the Crooked Saints. Ella contó que ama viajar, pero no le gusta viajar por avión ya que siempre la detienen para inspección secundaria, ella cree que creen que anda en drogas o que hace explosivos. Por ello, para uno de sus tours decidió hacer el tour en uno de sus carros, desde Virginia hasta California. El problema fue que su carro tenía un desperfecto que lo hacía temblar mucho y como Hansel y Gretel dejaba pedazos del carro en el camino. Le pasó de todo en ese tour, y en uno de esos eventos desafortunados en los que el auto falló,  terminó en medio de la nada en Colorado. Mientras arreglaban su auto en el único mecánico de la pequeña ciudad donde fue a dar, platicó con una mujer mexicana de mediana edad, y cuando salió el tema de la profesión de Maggie, la mujer le empezó a contar historias que nadie cree porque los mexicanos somos considerados muy supersticiosos.

Hello! On Sunday October 15th I had the chance of attending the Maggie Stiefvater signing in San Diego, a stop of her All the Crooked Saints tour. This was a ticketed event and even thou I pre ordered the book two weeks before the event I was number 51 in line.

The day was super hot and, as always, I was late, so couldn’t snatch a chair. When I arrived Maggie hadn’t started the event yet, so I picked up my copy of All the Crooked Saints, picked up a book plate and waited for the talk to start.

Maggie told us some background story about how All the Crooked Saints came to life. She loves traveling but doesn’t love traveling by plane because she always gets detained for second inspections, she believes they think she’s on drugs or does explosive devices. So for one of her tours she decided to travel by car only, one of her cars, from Virginia to California. Turns out, the car had a problem she didn’t fully address, and started failing on the road, shaking. In one of those multiple stops she ended up in the middle of nowhere in Colorado, a dessert land. In the small town she was at, while the only mechanic fixed the car, she talked with a counter Mexican middle aged woman, who after knowing Maggie writes paranormal stories for a living, shared with her some stories none believes.

¡Hola! Hoy les traigo la reseña de un libro que leí hace tiempo, En el Bosque de Eliza Wass, su novela debut.

Este libro cuenta la historia de Castella Cresswell y sus cinco hermanos, Hannan, Caspar, Mortimer, Delvive y Jerusalem. Por años su mundo ha estado confinado a su casa en lo profundo de un bosque, donde se apegan a las estrictas reglas de Dios, cuyos mensajes vienen directamente de su padre.

Lentamente, Castley y sus hermanos empiezan a probar los límites de las leyes que los atan, pero en la escuela siguen siendo los raros que siempre han sido en el mundo exterior. Las cosas cambian cuando Castley es forzada a hacer pareja para la clase de teatro con un chico llamado George Gray, quien le ofrece un vistazo a una vida llena de libertad.

El mundo de Castley rápidamente se expande más allá del bosque que conoce tan bien y de las creencias que alguna vez creyó eran verdades absolutas. Descubre que su padre puede haberles estado mintiendo a su familia con su religión y que toda su familia puede estar en riesgo, ya que su padre hace un anuncio de que pronto volverán a su hogar en el cielo. Con el tiempo corriendo y sus vidas en juego, Castley debe exponer la profundidad de las mentiras de su padre y pensar en un plan para liberarlos a todos de él.

En el bosque le muestra al lector un vistazo de como es el vivir con un padre controlador y fanático religioso, una pésima combinación. Por esto mismo no se pueden esperar personajes convencionales. La familia Cresswell definitivamente es peculiar y difícil de entender si no se ha vivido en una situación como la suya, ya sea de fanatismo o violencia domestica, pero aun así es fácil sentir empatía por ellos algunas ocasiones.

Hi, today I’m reviewing a book I read a while ago, The Creswell Plot by Eliza Wass, this book seems to have been published also under the name In the Dark, In the Woods with a different cover, but it’s the same book.

This book tells us the story of Castella Cresswell and her five siblings—Hannan, Caspar, Mortimer, Delvive, and Jerusalem. For years, their world has been confined to their ramshackle family home deep in the woods of upstate New York. They abide by the strict rule of God, whose messages come directly from their father.

school, they’re still the freaks they’ve always been to the outside world. Marked by their plain clothing. Unexplained bruising. Utter isolation from their classmates. That is, until Castley is forced to partner with the totally irritating, totally normal George Gray, who offers her a glimpse of a life filled with freedom and choice.

Castley’s world rapidly expands beyond the woods she knows so well and the beliefs she once thought were the only truths. She discovers that his father might be lying to her family with his imposing religion, and that all her family might be at risk because her father makes a chilling announcement: the Cresswells will soon return to their home in heaven. With time running out on all of their lives, Castley must expose the depth of her father’s lies and come up with a plan to save her family from her father’s grasp.

The Cresswell Plot shows the reader an insight of what is like to live under a controlling father who is also a religious fanatic, not a very good combination. Due to this you cannot expect regular characters. The Creswell family is definitely odd and hard to relate to if you haven’t live in a situation like theirs, but still is easy to feel some empathy towards them. They all have strange fears and attitudes that their father has imposed on them.

Evento: Firma de Marie Lu & Kiersten White en San Diego [Warcross tour]

¡Hola! ha pasado un rato desde mi última entrada porque no quería que la entrada del sorteo se perdiera con otras, esta vez les vengo a hablar de otro evento al que fui.

El sábado pasado, 23 de septiembre, fui a la última firma de autógrafos de Marie Lu en su tour Warcross, que se llevó a cabo en la librería Mysterious Galaxy en San Diego, California. Esta vez Marie Lu estuvo acompañada por la autora Kiersten White, que si no reconocen su nombre es autora de Hija de las Tinieblas.

Sinopsis

La obsesión comenzó hace unos años y ahora los seguidores de Warcross están dispersos por todo el mundo, algunos ansiosos por escapar de la realidad y otros, esperando hacer algún negocio. Emika Chen, una joven hacker, trabaja como cazarecompensas persiguiendo a los jugadores de Warcross que hacen apuestas ilegales. Pero el mundo de los cazadores es muy competitivo y sobrevivir en él se convierte en una verdadera hazaña. Emika necesita dinero y se arriesga a ingresar ilegalmente al juego inaugural del Campeonato Internacional de Warcross... y, por una falla técnica, termina convirtiéndose en furor de la noche a la mañana.

Convencida de que la arrestarán, Emika no puede creerlo cuando recibe una llamada de Hideo Tanaka, el creador del juego, con una oferta irresistible: necesita un espía dentro del torneo para desentrañar un problema de seguridad y quiere que ella se encargue. libro que ya había preordenado y compré aparte The Rose Society y Midnight Star de Marie Lu y también Beanstalker and Other Hilarious Scarytales de Kiersten White. Todo el evento fue una conversación entre ambas autoras sobre sus proyectos y experiencias. Hay una química maravillosa entre ambas, lo cual hizo al evento divertido y entretenido.

Marie Lu habló principalmente del libro que está promocionando, Warcross. Mencionó que este libro nació porque quería escribir algo menos sombrío como lo es Los Jóvenes de la Elite, así que escribió Warcross para ella. Decidió escribir una duología en vez de trilogía como ha hecho hasta ahora porque pensó que así se desharía del tedioso segundo libro que según sus palabras es el más difícil de escribir. No creyó que la estructura cambiaria tanto, pero escribir una duología resulto más difícil al tener que escribir dos libros en uno en el caso de la secuela.

Last Saturday, September 23, I attended the last signing of Marie Lu for the Warcross tour, for this one she was going to chat with author Kiersten White.

I arrived kind of late, the event had just started and I had to pick up the book I had preordered online to get a ticket for the signing line. The whole event was a chat between both authors, which have a super nice chemistry making everything fun and interesting.

Marie Lu talked mainly about her new book, Warcross. She mentioned that she wanted to write something lighter because the books she had been working on were dark (the Young Elites), and so she wrote Warcross for herself. She decided to challenge herself writing a duology instead of a trilogy, that way she could get rid of the middle book that’s always hard to write, but she didn’t think the structure would change that much. She mentioned that writing a duology turned out to be harder because she has to combine two books into one.

Lu also mentioned that right now Emika, Warcross main character, has become her favorite because she put so much of her own personality into Emika, so she identifies with her a lot. And finally she said that she would like to see Warcross adapted as an anime, she is currently watching Sword Art Online, an anime with a similar story about immersion videogames.
