Evento: Tahereh Mafi y Marie Lu en San Diego [Restore Me tour]

¡Hola! El martes pasado asistí a la firma de Tahereh Mafi en San Diego, que fue parte de su gira Restore Me. El evento tuvo lugar en Mysterious Galaxy y tuvo como anfitriona a la autora Marie Lu.

Casi llegué tarde, tuve que correr dos cuadras para tomar el autobús, y afortunadamente llegué justo a tiempo, recogí mi copia de Shatter Me (Destrózame en España y La Piel de Juliette en Latinoamérica, seguiré refiriéndome a estos libros con sus títulos originales en inglés) y me senté. Tahereh y Marie salieron a las 7:00 p.m.

El evento fue principalmente Marie preguntándole cosas a Tahereh y elogiándose mutuamente. Después de una breve presentación, Marie comenzó a contar su primera impresión de Tahereh y cómo descubrió Shatter Me en BEA antes de que saliera a la venta, y elogió la escritura de Tahereh que mejora continuamente a medida que Tahereh crece, Tahereh tenía 23 cuando Shatter Me salió en 2011. Marie comentó que Shatter Me es un libro que se quedó con ella debido a la peculiar voz de la protagonista, Juliette, que era algo nuevo y refrescante. Entonces comenzaron las preguntas.

Marie Lu [ML]: ¿Cómo fue para ti regresar al mundo Shatter Me? Escribiste las primeras tres novelas y luego te alejaste un rato. ¿Cómo tuviste la idea de continuar?

Tahereh Mafi [TM]: Es una pregunta justa, el último libro salió en 2014, hace 4 años. Lo que sucedió es que en ese momento pensé que la saga había terminado, sentí que terminó en un muy buen lugar, Juliette había crecido de una manera excelente y yo estaba lista para seguir adelante. Creo que era más que estaba lista para avanzar artística y creativamente que la historia había terminado, pero en ese momento parecía una buena elección. Quería hacer otra cosa, y lo hice, me moví en una dirección completamente diferente. Escribí novelas infantiles (middle grade, para niños de 8-12 años) durante un par de años.

ML: Increíbles novelas infantiles. Furthermore y Witchwood, que si aún no las han leído, háganlo.

TM: Y fue realmente divertido, un punto de vista diferente y un realismo mágico muy fantástico. Son muy diferentes y me divertí mucho con eso. Dejé atrás por completo de la trilogía Shatter Me, y un día estaba hablando con alguien sobre los libros y me hicieron una pregunta sobre los nombres de los personajes, y no podía recordar sus nombres, y pensé que probablemente debería saber la respuesta a esa pregunta. Así que los volví a leer de inicio a fin en 12 horas porque debería saber de qué se tratan, y los disfruté.

ML: Porque son geniales.

Event: Tahereh Mafi & Marie Lu in San Diego [Restore Me tour]

Hello! Last Tuesday I attended Tahereh Mafi’s signing in San Diego, part of her Restore Me tour. The event took place at Mysterious Galaxy and it was hosted by author Marie Lu.

I almost didn’t make it, I had to run two blocks to catch the bus, and thankfully I arrived just on time, picked up my copy of Shatter Me and sat down. Tahereh and Marie came out at 7:00 pm.

The event was mostly Marie asking things to Tahereh and complimenting each other. After a brief introduction Marie started telling her first impression of Tahereh and how she discovered Shatter Me in BEA when it was about to be released, and praised Tahereh’s writing that continuously grows as Tahereh ages, she was 23 when Shatter Me came out in 2011. Marie commented that Shatter Me is a book that stuck with her because of the peculiar voice of the protagonist, Juliette, something new and refreshing.  Then the questions started.

[I recorded the whole event, and this below is a brief transcription, I omitted some parts to make a summary of the whole event.]

Marie Lu [ML]: What was like to return to the Shatter Me world?  You wrote the first three

novels and then you stepped away from it for a while. How did you get the idea of continuing?

Tahereh Mafi [TM]: It’s a fair question, the last book came out in 2014, 4 years ago. What happened is that at the time I thought the series was over, I felt it ended in a very good place, Juliet had grown in a great way and I was ready to move on. I think it was more that I was ready to move on artistically and creatively that that the story was over, but in the moment it felt like a good choice. I wanted to do something else, and I did, I moved into a completely different direction I wrote middle grade novels for a couple of years.

ML: Amazing middle grade novels. Furthermore and Witchwood, which if you guys haven’t read them yet, please do.

TM: And it was really fun, a different point of view, and a very fantastical magical realism. They’re very different and I had a lot of fun with that. I fully moved on from the Shatter Me series, and I was having a conversation with someone about the books one day and they asked me a question about the characters names, and I couldn’t remember their names, and I thought I probably should know the answer to that question. So I re-read them start to finish in like 12 hours because I should know what they’re about, and I enjoyed them.

ML: Because they’re great.

Evento: Holly Black y Susan Dennard en San Diego [Cruel Prince & Sightwitch tour]

¡Hola! El 16 de febrero de 2018 asistí a la firma de libros de Holly Black y Susan Dennard que formó parte de sus toures Cruel Prince y Sightwitch respectivamente. El evento tuvo lugar en San Diego en la librería Mysterious Galaxy.

Antes de empezar, les daré un poco de información sobre las autoras.

Holly Black es una escritora y editora estadounidense, conocida por escribir Las crónicas de Spiderwick, una saga de 5 libros de fantasía para niños, junto con el ilustrador Tony DiTerlizzi y por escribir la saga "Magisterium" con Cassandra Clare.

Susan Dennard es una escritora estadounidense, es autora de los bestsellers Truthwitch y Windwitch, y de la trilogía Something Strange & Deadly.

Llegué alrededor de 15 minutos antes, pero no pude encontrar un asiento esta vez, así que recogí mi copia de Cruel Prince, compré otro libro y luego me quedé de pie esperando a que comenzara el evento. Esta vez, el evento fue moderado por la vendedora de libros y booktuber, Kaitlyn, por lo que el evento fue en formato de entrevista, por eso grabé el audio de todo y lo transcribí, fue más fácil que anotar en ese momento parte de lo que decían.

K: ¿Qué les atrajo al mundo de las hadas?

Holly Black [HB]: [No grabé la respuesta de Holly :c]

Susan Dennard [SD]: Empecé a leer cuentos de hadas y fantasía cuando era joven. Yo era una adolescente, no teníamos YA [Literatura juvenil], así que todo lo que podía consumir era fantasía para adultos, principalmente de la biblioteca. Y tampoco teníamos Amazon en ese entonces, por lo que sólo podía obtener lo que estaba en el estante de una librería o una biblioteca, lo que significaba que con frecuencia no leía las cosas en orden o una serie completa, omitía el libro cuatro.

K: ¿Creas o descubres a tus personajes? ¿Cómo es tu proceso?

HB: Solía ​​decir que creaba a mis personajes y me frustraba cuando la gente hablaba sobre cómo sus personajes se desviaban en ciertas direcciones. Mis personajes son flojos y no harían nada por mí, ni siquiera quieren estar en el libro. Nadie quiere estar en un libro, ¿verdad? Lo peor es descubrir que eres el protagonista de una novela, no te pasará nada bueno. Y ahora digo que en The Darkest Part of the Forest, que es el libro de hadas que escribí justo antes de este, tuve un personaje cuyo nombre es Hazel, que tenía un secreto que yo no sabía. Y yo estaba como "esto no parece posible, ¿cómo es que ella tiene un secreto que yo no sé?" Pero así era y fue una gran parte del libro. Me gustaría decir que los creo, pero a veces es un proceso de figurar, crear y luego extrapolar de su comportamiento todas las cosas que quieren ocultarme.

SD: Definitivamente creo algunos personajes. Descubrí esto con una novela que escribí en mi primera saga, creé tal vez un personaje secundario, pero cuando se trataba de escribir una novela desde su punto de vista, me di cuenta de que en realidad no los conozco. Entonces tengo que descubrirlos, lleva tiempo. A veces no tienen voz en mi cabeza y no están listos para hablar conmigo. Y los presiono por las fechas límite. Pero es un proceso de esperar que esa voz venga, y aprendí que si no tengo su voz, no puedo escribir esa historia hasta que la voz esté en mi cabeza, y todo lo que escriba va a ser una mierda.

Event: Holly Black and Susan Dennard in San Diego [Cruel Prince and Sightwitch Tour]

Hello! On February 16^th 2018 I attended the book signing of Holly Black and Susan Dennard for their Cruel Prince and Sightwitch book tour. The event took place in San Diego at Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore.

I arrived around 15 minutes early, but I couldn’t find a seat this time, so I picked up my copy of Cruel Prince and bought another book and then stood around waiting for the event to start. This time the event was moderated by booktuber and book seller, Kaitlyn, so the event was in an interview format, that’s why I recorded the audio of everything and transcribed it, it was easier than summarizing.

K: What drew you to the world of fairies?

Holly Black [HB]: [I didn’t  record Holly’s answer :c]

Susan Dennard [SD]: I started reading fairy tales and fantasy when I was young. I was a teen, we didn’t have YA, so all I could consume was adult fantasy mostly from the library. And we didn’t have Amazon either back then, so you could only get what was on the shelf at a bookstore or a library which meant you frequently didn’t read things in order or a whole series, you would skip book four.

K: Do you create or discover your characters? What is your process like?

HB: I used to say I created my characters and get frustrated when people talked about how their characters veered off in certain directions. My characters are lazy and they wouldn’t do a single thing for me, they don’t want to be in the book. None wants to be in a book, right? It’s the worst thing ever to find out you’re the protagonist of a novel, nothing good will happen to you. And then I would say that in Darkest Part of the Forest, which is the faerie book I wrote right before this one, I had a character whose name is Hazel who had a secret that I didn’t know. And I was like “this doesn’t seem possible, how does she have a secret I don’t know”, but she did and it was kind of the big turn of the book. I would like to say that I create them but sometimes is a process of figuring, creating and then extrapolating from their behavior all of the things they want to hide from me.

SD: I definitely create some characters. I found this with a novella I wrote for my first series, I created maybe a secondary character, but when it comes to write a novella from their point of view, I realize I don’t actually know them. So I have to discover them, it takes time. Sometimes they don’t have a voice in my head and are not ready to talk to me. And I push their word, deadlines. But it’s a process of waiting for that voice to come, and I learned that if I don’t have a voice, I cannot write that story until the voice is in my head, and everything I write is just going to be crap.

Event: Neal Shusterman in San Diego [Thunderhead tour]

On 02/10/2018 I had the chance of attending Neal Shusterman’s signing in San Diego, which was part of his Thunderhead book tour.

I arrived 15 minutes early and snatched a seat. Before Neal’s appearance, the staff of Mysterious Galaxy did a small trivia of the Arc of Sychte books to give away double sided posters to the winners. I haven’t read the books yet so I didn’t participate, but the posters were really pretty and many people participated, even more than once.

At around 2:10 Neal appeared, introduced by one of the book sellers. He started telling us

how he got the idea for Scythe around the time his book series Unwind was published, at the same time as the hunger games when YA dystopia was still not a thing. He asked himself what would happen if we lived in a perfect world, no illness, no war, and no death.

The premise of this trilogy is set in the far future, where death by natural causes has been virtually eliminated thanks to advance technology and an advanced computer system known as "ThunderHead" that controls society. The Scythes are an independent organization tasked with deciding who must die as overpopulation has remained a problem.

Evento: C.B Lee en San Diego [Not Your Villain Tour]

¡Hola! El 15 de octubre, además de ir a la firma de Maggie Stiefvater, me quedé para la firma de C.B Lee, autora de la saga Sidekick Squad.

Su firma fue parte del tour que está haciendo conmemorando la publicación de su novela, Not Your Villain, segundo libro en la saga Sidekick Squad. El primer libro de la saga se titula Not Your Sidekick y se contempla que la saga este conformada por cuatro libros, cada uno enfocado en un personaje diferente con una meta en común. Abajo dejaré la sinopsis de los dos libros que han sido publicados hasta ahora.

Not Your Sidekick: La historia se desarrolla en Andover, un lugar donde los súper poderes son comunes. el libro se centra en Jess, una chica que pese a tener un linaje heroico, nació sin poderes y busca poder mejorar su currículo para poder entrar a una buena universidad, es entonces que encuentra el lugar perfecto para hacer sus prácticas, sólo que resulta ser un trabajo para el mayor

súper villano de la ciudad. Mientras tanto, tiene la fortuna de trabajar con Abby, la chica que le ha gustado desde hace tiempo. Lo que inició como unas simples prácticas, se vuelve peligroso cuando descubre un plan más grande que todos los héroes y villanos juntos.

Not Your Villain: Bells Broussard pensó que lo había logrado cuando sus poderes se manifestaron de forma temprana como cambia formas, hasta que se vuelve el villano más buscado del país. Después de descubrir algo grande que la Liga de Héroes ha estado encubriendo, Bells y sus amigos Jess, Emma y Abby se dan a la tarea de ir en una misión secreta para encontrar a la Resistencia. Mientras tanto el antiguo héroe, ahora sediento de poder, Captain Orion, anda suelto con un suero peligroso que les quita sus poderes a los meta-humanos y además una nueva amenaza robotizada aparece poniendo a todos en peligro.

Evento: Maggie Stiefvater en San Diego [All the Crooked Saints tour]

¡Hola! El domingo 15 de octubre tuve la oportunidad de asistir a la firma de Maggie Stiefvater en San Diego, una parada de su tour All the Crooked Saints. Este fue un evento enumerado y aunque pre ordené el libro con dos semanas de anticipación, me tocó el número 51 en la fila.

agarrar una silla. Cuando llegué afortunadamente la plática aun no iniciaba, así que recogí mi copia de All the Crooked Saints, tome un book plate y esperé a que iniciara el evento.

Maggie platicó un poco sobre la historia detrás de All the Crooked Saints. Ella contó que ama viajar, pero no le gusta viajar por avión ya que siempre la detienen para inspección secundaria, ella cree que creen que anda en drogas o que hace explosivos. Por ello, para uno de sus tours decidió hacer el tour en uno de sus carros, desde Virginia hasta California. El problema fue que su carro tenía un desperfecto que lo hacía temblar mucho y como Hansel y Gretel dejaba pedazos del carro en el camino. Le pasó de todo en ese tour, y en uno de esos eventos desafortunados en los que el auto falló,  terminó en medio de la nada en Colorado. Mientras arreglaban su auto en el único mecánico de la pequeña ciudad donde fue a dar, platicó con una mujer mexicana de mediana edad, y cuando salió el tema de la profesión de Maggie, la mujer le empezó a contar historias que nadie cree porque los mexicanos somos considerados muy supersticiosos.

Event: Maggie Stiefvater signing at San Diego [All the Crooked Saints tour]

Hello! On Sunday October 15th I had the chance of attending the Maggie Stiefvater signing in San Diego, a stop of her All the Crooked Saints tour. This was a ticketed event and even thou I pre ordered the book two weeks before the event I was number 51 in line.

The day was super hot and, as always, I was late, so couldn’t snatch a chair. When I arrived Maggie hadn’t started the event yet, so I picked up my copy of All the Crooked Saints, picked up a book plate and waited for the talk to start.

Maggie told us some background story about how All the Crooked Saints came to life. She loves traveling but doesn’t love traveling by plane because she always gets detained for second inspections, she believes they think she’s on drugs or does explosive devices. So for one of her tours she decided to travel by car only, one of her cars, from Virginia to California. Turns out, the car had a problem she didn’t fully address, and started failing on the road, shaking. In one of those multiple stops she ended up in the middle of nowhere in Colorado, a dessert land. In the small town she was at, while the only mechanic fixed the car, she talked with a counter Mexican middle aged woman, who after knowing Maggie writes paranormal stories for a living, shared with her some stories none believes.

Hola, el pasado jueves 17 de noviembre de 2016 tuve la oportunidad de asistir a la firma de autógrafos de Shannon Messenger en la librería Mysterious Galaxy en San Diego. En esa librería hay firmas de autógrafos bastante seguido, se han presentado autores como Marie Lu, Nicola Yoon, Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff, entre muchos otros.

            Shannon Messenger es la autora de la saga Sophie Foster, la Guardiana de las Ciudades Perdidas (Keeper of the Lost Cities), tristemente en español sólo está disponible el primer libro. La razón de su visita a San Diego es el tour que está realizando para conmemorar la publicación del quinto libro de la saga, Lodestar. El evento se suponía empezaría a las 6:00 de la tarde, pero comenzó un poco más tarde. Messenger se veía cansada y con justa razón, se levantó a las 5:00 am para viajar de Arizona a San Diego.

            La primera parte del evento fue una plática sobre el nuevo libro, la autora agradeció al público por su presencia, cuando llegué sólo habíamos 8 personas, pero cuando se acercó más la hora se llenó el lugar. También agradeció a los fans debido a que Keeper of the Lost Cities llegó a la lista de sagas mejor vendidas del New York Times.

            Después de la plática, el evento tomó un formato de preguntas y respuestas (Q&A), el público estuvo muy participativo, principalmente los niños, lo cual se me hizo muy interesante, en serio no saben lo felices y emocionados que se veían aunque me hicieron sentir vieja, pero qué podía esperar si es una saga catalogada como literatura infantil. Durante la sesión de preguntas y respuestas Messenger dijo varias cosas interesantes sobre la saga, sobre cómo se volvió una escritora, cómo es el ser una escritora y dio algunos consejos a aquellos que desean volverse escritores.

Hello, on Thursday November 17, 2016 I had the chance to attend the signing of Shannon Messenger

Fifth installment of KOTLC

at the bookstore Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego.

            Shannon Messenger is the author of the Keeper of the Lost Cities series, and the Sky Fall trilogy. The reason of her visit to San Diego was the tour she is doing for the release of the fifth installment of Keeper of the Lost Cities, Lodestar. The event was supposed to start at 6:00 pm, but it started a few minutes late. Messenger looked tired, and with a good reason, she flew from Arizona straight to San Diego.

            The first part of the event was a talk about the new book, the author thanked the public for being there and talked about how successful the series has become thanks to the fans, now Keeper of the Lost Cities is in the list of bestselling series of the New York Times.

            After the talk the event took the format of a Q&A session, the public was really participative, and most of the participants were kids (I felt so old), during the session Messenger said interesting things about the series, how she became an author, what is like to be an author, and some tips to aspiring authors.
