      Supuestamente el séptimo hijo de un séptimo hijo es un ser con un poder increíble. En la familia Heap nace un niño así, a quien nombran como Septimus, el niño muere y se lo llevan precipitadamente dejando a la familia devastada. Tras aquel suceso, Silas Heap se encuentra con una bebé abandonada en la nieve y él y su esposa deciden adoptarla para compensar la pérdida de su hijo.
