¡Hola! Hoy estoy reseñando Ruina y Ascenso, el tercer y último libro de la trilogía Grisha.

Estaba indecisa de continuar con la trilogía porque no me gustó Asedio y Tormenta, pero ya tenía el libro, así que le hice el intento.

Mal.

El libro comienza justo donde terminó el segundo, con Alina débil y derrotada ocultándose de el Oscuro (Darkling), ha perdido su poder y ha estado bajo tierra por un tiempo, por lo que el libro es un poco lento al principio, pero luego el ritmo se acelera cuando Alina, Mal y compañía deciden abandonar su escondite y buscar la ayuda de Nikolai, que ni siquiera saben si está vivo o no.

Sé que mucha gente ama a Nikolai, pero yo no le tenía cariño en el libro anterior. Pensé que sólo servía para ser un poderoso aliado de Alina y un obstáculo en su relación con Mal, pero me gustó más en este libro, creo que su personaje se desarrolló mucho.

Nunca he sido fan de Alina, en mi primera crítica dije que me gustaba porque ella no era el típico personaje perfecto, pero se volvió muy fastidiosa en mi opinión, es un tanto egoísta y tiene hambre de poder, y sentí que ella misma creaba obstáculos entre ella y los demás, principalmente con Mal.

Hello! Today I’m reviewing Ruin and Rising, the third and final book of the Grisha trilogy.

I was hesitant to continue with the trilogy because I didn’t like Siege and Storm at all, but I already had the book, so I gave it a try.

Mal.

The book starts just where the second one ended, with Alina weak and defeated hiding from

the Darkling, she has lost her power and has been undergrounds for a while, so the book is a bit slow at the beginning but then the pace pick up when Alina, Mal and company decide to leave the Apparat and look for the help of Nikolai, who they don’t even know if he’s alive or not.

I know a lot of people love Nikolai, but I wasn’t fond of him in the previous book. I thought he only served with the purpose of being a powerful ally to Alina and an obstacle in her relationship with Mal, but I liked him more in this book, I think his character developed a lot.  

I’ve never been a fan of Alina, in my fist review I said I liked her because she wasn’t the typical perfect character, but she became annoying in my opinion, she is kind of selfish and power hungry, and I felt she created obstacles between her and others, mainly Mal.

The Language of Thorns de Leigh Bardugo es una colección de cuentos de hadas ambientada en el mismo mundo que la trilogía Grisha y Seis de Cuervos.

"Viaja a un mundo de gangas oscuras atravesadas por la luz de la luna, de ciudades

embrujadas y bosques hambrientos, de bestias parlantes y gólems de jengibre, donde la voz de una joven sirena puede convocar tormentas mortales y donde un río puede seguir las ordenes de un joven enamorado  pero sólo a cambio un terrible precio."

Realmente no sé cómo comenzar esta reseña, ¿Qué puedo decir? Me encantó el libro.

En primer lugar, este es un libro físicamente hermoso, el diseño en la tapa dura es precioso, se ve elegante y misterioso con y sin la sobrecubierta. Las páginas del libro son todas a color y cada página tiene un marco al que se le van agregando más elementos con cada página que pasa hasta formar una ilustración final de dos páginas que resume la historia. El marco es como un libro de animación, si pasas las páginas rápido, puedes verlo como una pequeña animación.

The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo is a collection of fairytales set in the same world of The Grisha Trilogy and Six of Crows.

“Travel to a world of dark bargains struck by moonlight, of haunted towns and hungry woods, of talking beasts and gingerbread golems, where a young mermaid's voice can summon deadly storms and where a river might do a lovestruck boy's bidding but only for a terrible price.”

I don’t really know how to start this review, what can I say? I totally loved the book.

First of all this is a physically beautiful book, the design in the hardcover is gorgeous; it looks elegant and mysterious with and without the dust jacket. The book pages are full color and each page has a frame that adds more elements with each page until forming a final two pages illustration that sums up the story. The frame is like an animation book, if you pass the pages fast, you can see it as a small animation.

¡Hola! Finalmente puedo reseñar este libro, este es en realidad el último libro que leí el año pasado y pronto publicaré mi reseña de Ruina y ascenso. Decidí leer la trilogía Grisha antes de comenzar Seis de Cuervos, que sé que es un libro realmente popular.

Asedio y tormenta es el segundo libro de la trilogía Grisha, la historia comienza inmediatamente donde terminó el primer libro, Mal y Alina escaparon de La Sombra para comenzar una nueva vida, pero su sueño no dura mucho, ya que son perseguidos por los hombres del Oscuro (Darkling). El Oscuro emergió de La Sombra con un nuevo y terrorífico poder que condena a todos. Con la ayuda de Nikolai, el príncipe de Ravka, Alina regresa al país que abandonó, decidida a luchar contra las fuerzas que se reúnen contra Ravka. Pero a medida que su poder crece, Alina se adentra más en el juego de la magia prohibida del Oscuro, y más lejos de Mal. De alguna manera, tendrá que elegir entre su país, su poder y el amor que siempre pensó que la guiaría, o arriesgarse a perderlo todo ante la tormenta que se avecina.

Este es definitivamente mi libro menos favorito en la trilogía. El comienzo es interesante porque el Oscuro apareció más rápido de lo que pensaba, pero luego el ritmo disminuyó drásticamente cuando desapareció de nuevo.

Hay nuevos personajes, unos de los más importantes son Nikolai, Tolya y Tamar. Nikolai es el más importante porque se convierte en un nuevo interés amoroso para Alina.

Hello! I can finally review this book, this is actually the last book I read last year, and I’ll post my review of Ruin and Rising soon. I decided to read the Grisha trilogy first before starting Six of Crows, which I know is a really loved book.

Siege and Storm is the second book in the Grisha trilogy, the story starts immediately where

the first book ended, Mal and Alina escaped from the Shadow Fold to start a new life, but their dream doesn’t last long, they’re being hunted by the Darkling’s men. The Darkling emerged from the Shadow Fold with a new and terrifying power that dooms everyone. With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka. But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling’s game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her--or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm.

This is definitely my least favorite book in the trilogy. The beginning is interesting because the Darkling appeared faster than I thought, but then the pace slowed down drastically when the Darkling disappeared again.

There are new characters in this one, one of the most important are Nikolai, Tolya and Tamar. Nikolai is the most important one because he becomes a new love interest for Alina.

Evento: Mi experiencia en San Diego Comic Con 2017 / Domingo 23 de Julio

¡Hola! ha pasado un rato desde mi última entrada, esta vez les hablaré sobre mi experiencia en San Diego Comic Con este año.

Este año sólo alcance boleto para un día, domingo, el último día de la convención donde todo
está más barato, pero también está todo escogido y hay menos firmas que los otros días. Con mucha antelación preparé un presupuesto e hice una lista de los libros que compraría y las firmas que quería conseguir.

No asistí a ningún panel porque, aunque son interesantes, al ser el último día de la convención y el único que fui, quería pasar  el día explorando el Exhibit Hall y el domingo la convención termina más temprano que los demás días.

Llegué exactamente a las 9:00 am, cuando estaban abriendo las puertas, así que entré y subí a la zona de autógrafos por la bolsa de la convención y los libros que dan con el mapa del evento y horarios. Después fui al Coat Check a dejar una mochila de llantas que llevé y la dejé con unos libros que ocuparía rato después, de ahí partí a mi aventura en el exhibit hall.

Hi! It’s been a while since my last post, this time I’ll talk about my experience at comic con this year.

Marissa Meyer (Renegades, The Lunar Chronicles)

 I only attended one day, Sunday, the last day when everything is cheaper but there are less signings and the con ends earlier. Several days before the con, I made a budget and listed the book related events I wanted to attend.

I did not attend any panels because as I only had one day to enjoy the con, I wanted to explore the exhibit hall as much as possible, but I would attend some post-panel signings.  

I arrived exactly at 9:00 am and picked up my con bag, left a backpack with wells in the coat check with some books inside, and started my adventure in the exhibit hall.

Marie Lu (Legend, The Young Elites, Warcross)

The first signing I had planned was Sarah Khun, author of Heroine Complex. The signing would be held at the exhibit hall from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. When the time arrived I got lost and couldn’t find the booth, when I finally did I noticed they were only selling a special box that contained the second book, and other bookish things, but the price was $60, so I went to a bookstore booth named Mysterious Galaxy to buy the book, but turned out Mysterious Galaxy had signed copies of the book, all the copies they had were signed so I thought I could postpone buying it to buy another book and buy it signed later in their store.

The second signing I planned to attend to was Pierce Brown’s (Red Rising trilogy), that would be held at Del Rey booth from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. It was a ticketed event, first come first serve. I got a ticket and waited in line for half an hour but the line didn’t move, I only moved 2 people, so I left because other signing was approaching.

¡Hola! Ya ha pasado rato desde mi última reseña, esta vez estoy reseñando Sombra y Hueso de Leigh Bardugo, un libro que me llamaba mucho la atención por las buenas reseñas que había leído de él.

destrozada por La Sombra, una oscuridad llena de monstruos come humanos. En este mundo algunas personas poseen habilidades diferentes de algún tipo de magia, a esas personas se les conoce como Grisha y son dirigidos por un misterioso hombre conocido como Darkling (el Oscuro).

            La protagonista de esta historia es Alina Starkov, una chica que quedó huérfana de niña y es una refugiada que jamás ha destacado en algo. Un día su regimiento es atacado dentro de La Sombra, durante el ataque ella descubre que dentro de ella hay un poder oculto que podría ser la clave para liberar a su país. Después de este descubrimiento, el Oscuro le ordena a Alina dejar su estilo de vida y unirse a la corte real para ser entrenada como una Grisha, pero hay muchas lecciones que Alina aprenderá, no sólo sobre su poder, sino también sobre ella y el mundo lleno de secretos en el que vive.

            Tengo muchas cosas positivas sobre este libro. Cuando comencé a leerlo no sabía que esperar, había leído muy buenas reseñas de él, pero veía mucho que decían que Seis de Cuervos era mucho mejor que estos libros, así que me debatí mucho para escoger cual comprar, al final agarré este que estaba más barato.

Hello! It’s been a while since my last review, this time I’m reviewing Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo, a book I was really curious about due the good reviews I’ve read about it.

            Shadow and Bone is set in the nation of Ravka, a nation surrounded by enemies and torn by

the Shadow Fold, a darkness filled with monsters that eat humans. In this world some people have different abilities of some sort of magic, those people are known as the Grisha and they’re lead by a mysterious man known as the Darlkling.

            The protagonist of this story is Alina Starkov, a refugee and orphan girl that has never been good at anything. One day her regiment is attacked on the fold, during the attack she discovers that within her there is a hidden power that could be the key to set her country free. After this discovery, Alina is ordered by the Darkling to leave her friends and join the royal court to be trained as a Grisha, but there are several lessons Alina will learn, not only about her power, but about her and the world full of secrets she lives in.   

            I have a lot of things to say about this book, most of them are positive. When I started reading it I didn’t know what to expect, I’ve read very good reviews about this book but everyone seemed to agree that Six of Crows is better than The Grisha Trilogy, so I debated a lot with myself about what book buy, Six of Crows or this one, in the end I chose this one because it was cheaper, I have my copy signed by the author.

[Event] My Experience at San Diego Comic Con 2016 / Saturday, July 23.

On Saturday July 23 I had the chance to attend the biggest pop culture convention in the United States, Comic con at San Diego convention center. I was super excited because the only time I attended before was in 2008, and the following years I couldn’t get a ticket until this year! The first time I attended I was looking for anime related stuff, but this year I looked for books related stuff. I made my schedule with the signings I wanted to attend, fewer that the ones I actually got.

            When I entered the exhibit hall the first thing I did was to go to the Fierce Reads booth for the signing of Marissa Meyer at 9:45 am. Few minutes before it started, the staff made us line up, I was the fourth person and we went with her in pairs. Marissa Meyer was super kind, she signed all my books of The Lunar Chronicles, the staff took me a pic with her, and she gave me a signed poster and sampler of Wiresand Nerve. Because I said I was from Mexico and I brought all my books, they told the staff to give me extra bookmarks because I was a “big fan”. I was afraid she wouldn’t sign all my books; I had read on internet that sometimes there is a limit of one or two books per person.

[Evento] Mi experiencia en San Diego Comic Con 2016 / Sábado 23 de Julio

El día sábado 23 de julio tuve la oportunidad de asistir a la convención de cultura pop más importante y conocida de Estados Unidos, Comic Con en el San Diego Convention Center.  Estaba muy emocionada puesto que la única vez que he asistido fue en 2008, hace ya varios ayeres, después no pude conseguir boletos hasta este año. Esa vez que fui iba con la idea de ver cosas relacionadas a anime, este año fui para ver cosas relacionadas con libros. Hice mi horario en casa con las firmas que buscaba, que eran menos de las que conseguí al final, fue un día muy bueno.

            Cuando logré entrar al exhibit hall lo primero que hice fue ir al puesto de Fierce Reads para la firma de autógrafos de Marissa Meyer a las 9:45 am, unos minutos antes de que empezara nos formaron en una fila, yo fui  la cuarta persona, y nos pasaban con ella de dos en dos. Marissa Meyer fue súper amable, me firmó todos mis libros de Las Crónicas Lunares, me tomaron foto con ella, me dio un poster de Wires and Nerve autografiado y el sampler de la novela gráfica. Y como al ir de México, llevar todos los libros y estar prácticamente temblando de la emoción, quedé como  “muy fan” y me regalaron cuatro separadores de las crónicas lunares. Tenía miedo de que no quisiera firmar todos mis libros por ser muchos y porque había leído que muchas veces sólo dejan un libro o dos como máximo, creo que fue lo que pasó con Sarah J Mass y ocupabas comprarlo ahí.
